What is known as the Acquiring Bank and what is the difference between and acquiring bank and a merchant bank?
An acquiring bank, also often referred to as an acquirer, is a financial institution that processes card payments on behalf of a merchant. When a customer makes a payment using their card, the acquiring bank communicates with the issuing bank, which is the bank that issued the payment card, to authorise and process that transaction. The acquiring bank then transfers funds from the customer’s account into a merchant’s account.
A merchant bank however provides usually provides business loans, investment services and similar financial products or a commercial basis. While the term merchant bank is sometimes linked with acquiring bank use, they serve very different purposes. A merchant bank typically focuses on corporate finance, offering services such as underwriting, mergers, acquisitions and fundraising for businesses, but an acquiring bank specifically deals with payment processing.
The key difference sites with their functions, an acquiring bank allows merchants to accept card payments, with a merchant bank focussing on financing and investment services. In the UK’s financial sector many banks offer both acquiring services and merchant banking, but these terms refer to distinct roles within the financial industry.
